How to Become an Extension Volunteer in the Master Gardener Program
Learn about plants and how to take care of them. Participate in an in person Extension program or sign up for our online Foundations in Horticulture.
As a Master Gardener Volunteer, you are a representative of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension. Our Volunteer Onboarding course will explain the scope of your role as a volunteer. This will also enroll you into the program, including the required criminal background check. Finally, you will complete the entrance exam, which requires a score of 70% or better. Our onboarding course is only available January 1 through March 15, annually.
As an Extension Volunteer in the Master Gardener Program you apply your knowledge and skills to the people and the communities you live through answering garden questions, educating others, and gardening. A minimum of 24 hours of volunteer activity and 10 hours of continuing education are required to be completed and reported each year.
#4. Make a Difference
Your involvement will lead to an increase in knowledge and skill in yourself and those your reach. You will use your knowledge of plants to improve lives of others and the community you live in. This, ultimately, will lead to a bigger change in the world around us.
