Featured Projects

Community Beautification Projects

In an ongoing effort to beautify and engage our local communities, Juneau County MGVs planned, planted and maintained pubic garden spaces in the towns of Tomah, New Lisbon, Mauston and Elroy.

Boorman House Stewardship

MGVs maintain the gardens at the Boorman House, a 19th century Victorian home owned by the Juneau County Historical Society. The gardens are the first contact point for visitors to the museum. Plants are labeled to inform curious visitors what is there.

Inspiring the Next Generation

MGVs build gardening interest with kids in the Royal School District, Elroy.  One MGV worked with 20 grade school children to plant trees and along with the Parks Department taught them the correct way to plant, water and care for new plantings. In summer-long project, MGVs taught the kids how to plant and care for their own garden.   Another MGV worked with an equestrian club and taught kids square-foot-gardening. One MGV said “we hope how caring for our surroundings can make a difference to our communities.”

County fair boothPublic Education Efforts

MGVs introduced various gardening topics to visitors at both the Elroy Fair and Juneau County Fair.  MGVs won a blue ribbon for their educational booth on wild parsnips, a toxic plant for animals and people.  At the Elroy Fair MGVs reported over 150 contacts with visitors during the 4 days of the event.
