Master Gardener Program in Outagamie County 2018

The Master Gardener Program in Outagamie County started in 1999. Over 532 people have been trained since that time, and there are currently 112 certified Master Gardener Volunteers (MGVs) for 2019.

In 2018, Outagamie County Master Gardener Volunteers reported 8716.5 hours of community service, worth a value of over $209,196.

Grow vegetables for Food Pantry

Outside the left field fence at the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers baseball stadium, in a highly visible location, lies a 50’ X 50’ vegetable garden. The garden, sponsored by Greenstone Financial, is a part of the “Grow a Row for St. Joe’s” campaign, where all of the produce grown is donated to St. Joe’s Food Pantry in Appleton. MGV’s, Timber Rattler staff, and students from Freedom High School’s agricultural education department, grew over 400 pounds of vegetables, and garnered much attention from broadcast and social media.

Grow Vegetables for Homeless Shelter

MGVs planned, planted, and maintained flower and vegetable gardens produce donated to Homeless Connections in Appleton.  Kaitlin Bricco, UW-Extension Horticulture Assistant, said, “this is a great way to build comradery with volunteers, and a creative way to address a community need.”

Support Community Organizations with Garden Walk

Over 200 individuals attended the Outagamie County Master Gardener Volunteers home garden tour.  Funds raised from the event benefited Fox Cities Salvation Army Food Pantry, the Salvation Army Bread of Life Center, the St. Joseph Food Program, and the Appleton Seed Library.

Educate Visitors to County Fair

MGVs provided free seeds to visitors to their booth at the Outagamie County Fair.  During the event MGVs shared display boards on various gardening topics and answered visitors’ questions.
