Master Gardener Program in Washington County 2015

The Master Gardener Program in Ozaukee County started in 2000. Over 500 people have been trained since that time, and there are currently 105 certified Master Gardener Volunteers (MGVs) for 2016. For information about the MG Program contact Ozaukee Co. UWEX Department Head Kate Pawasarat.

Community Gardens Deliver Food Security

The 8 year old Washington County Community Garden (WCCG) provides an opportunity for 150 people to garden on 78 rental plots, harvesting thousands of pounds of food every year. It has become a model and resource for others to begin community gardens. Seven community garden programs have been established using elements of the WCCG as a guide. All of the gardens donate surplus produce and some have plots designated for pantries. In 2015, 15-20,000 pounds of food were harvested in the 8 gardens, for an estimated

$40,000 worth of locally grown food. In addition, many of gardens have a volunteer requirement, for a value of about $11,000 in labor.

Students Learn About Growing Food

MGVs, as part of the Green Team program, have helped students at Webster Middle School learn how to garden, where their food comes from, and the value of sharing their harvest with area food pantries. They have learned about hydroponics, seed basics, germination and taken field trips to places such as Growing Power and the D.C. Smith Greenhouses in Madison among other places.

Nursing Home Residents Benefit From Gardens

MGVs work with staff and residents at Lasata Care Center, a skilled nursing facility in Cedarburg on projects including raised beds for accessible gardening, a greenhouse for starting and over- wintering plants, perennial beds, a butterfly garden, a rose garden, and vegetable and herb gardens. Residents and their visitors enjoy the visual beauty of the gardens and the therapeutic advantages which gardening provides.
