Master Gardener Program in Jackson County 2015

The Master Gardener Program in Jackson County started in 2000. Over 100 people have been trained since that time, and there are currently 8 certified Master Gardener Volunteers (MGVs) for 2016. The UWEX Educator facilitating the MG Program is Agriculture Agent Trisha Wagner.

Milkweeds for Monarchs

MGVs developed a monarch butterfly habitat demonstration plot at the Spaulding Road Community Garden in partnership with the city of Black River Falls and the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Five species of milkweed were planted in 2015 to grow plants for monarch caterpillars and other pollinators and to eventually provide seed for to distribute to others in the area to grow milkweed to help monarch butterflies. MGVs harvested 50 grams of seed from one of the plots in the fall. The plot has been used as a demonstration for workshops and learning activities with the Jackson County Boys

& Girls Club. A display on monarch butterflies and the Spaulding Road Community Garden Milkweed Project was at the library for the month of August and was used at the County Fair and Green Life Expo.

Helping Older Adults Garden

MGVs worked with clients at the adult daycare facility to offer assisted gardening opportunities. They arranged for vegetable and flower plant donations, built and repaired garden tables, and planted the beds with the participants. MGVs taught participants (and their caregivers) how to care for the table gardens. The facility’s clients enjoyed a number of meals using the vegetables from the table gardens, learning to care for their plants.

Designing a Memorial Garden

The Bolton Refuge House is a safe haven for battered women. MGVs created a memorial garden for one of their longtime supporters, who had recently passed away. They designed the garden, educated the staff  on how to choose plants and care for the garden.
