Master Gardener Program in Bayfield County 2015

The Master Gardener Program in Bayfield County started in 1996. Over 95 people have been trained since that time, and there are currently 13 certified Master Gardener Volunteers (MGVs) for 2016. The UWEX Educator facilitating the MG Program is Horticulture Educator Matt Cogger.

County Fair Booth Promotes Birds and Insects

The focus of the blue ribbon-winning MGV booth at the County Fair was Attracting Butterflies and Hummingbirds. It included 30 different shrubs, perennials, annuals and vines that would attract butterflies   and   hummingbirds.   Also   included were hummingbird feeders, a butterfly house, a puddling area for butterflies and a miniature bird bath. Brochures on butterfly gardens, hummingbird gardens, and a recipe card for hummingbird feeding were provided. Many viewers said they plan to grow areas to attract butterflies and hummingbirds now.

Community Center Gardens Beautified

MGVs purchased and planted annuals, perennials and bulbs for gardens surrounding   the Town of   Namakagon   Hall/Community   Center.   They also raised a variety of annuals such as zinnias, nasturtium and cleome to add to the planting. They maintained these gardens throughout the summer by watering, weeding, deadheading, and maintaining the water system. Favorable comments were received regarding the added beauty provided by the gardens.

Reinvigorating the Forest Lodge Facility Grounds

MGVs worked with other volunteers at Forest Lodge, an 870 acre estate on the south shore of Lake Namakagon. The complex was gifted to the American people to preserve and enjoy and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.  The grounds had been neglected for a number of years, so volunteers weeded and worked some plots. MGVs also provided valuable advice for other partners on renovating the landscaping.
